3... It's A Magic Number

Is it?

IS IT?!

Or is it the scariest fucking number you've ever heard uttered by an RE with a wand up your hoo hoo?

Oooohhh, you want more detail? I'm sorry, okay then. I'll try to keep it short, as my brain is buzzing and my body is being hijacked by gestational sacs.

I had an ultrasound today. I had a tiny bit of spotting and wanted reassurance that all was well.

And, well...

There are 3 sacs. Three. 2+1. 1+1+1.

One looks really good. Could see the heartbeat flickering and everything (totally AMAZING, but more on that later... this post is all about freaking out). The other two are small and there doesn't seem to be much going on. But they are there. Three of them. Three. Did I say that yet?!

When I got home from work today, my husband greeted me by saying, "Hi everyone. Glad you are all home." This is why I love my husband... he always makes me laugh just when I think there is nothing to laugh about.

Because, really I'm scared. I'm excited, but I. AM. SCARED.

I might be in the minority among IF women, but I have never longed for a twin pregnancy. And I never even let myself think about triplets. I once came across a woman on an IVF message board who wrote that she wanted triplets so she could just get on with her life. I remember thinking that she was a fool. Is this karma for thinking bad thoughts about that woman?

But the reality is this....I'm so very thrilled to be pregnant. And to know that one is doing well. And the doctor says that it is "most likely" going to result in a singleton birth. A twin pregnancy is "possible." Three is "doubtful."

"Three is doubtful." This is my mantra. This is being replayed over and over in my head. In between choruses of the "3 Is A Magic Number" song of course because, damn, it is a catchy tune.

Holy cow! I am totally with you on being freaked out. But whether you end up with one, two or three, you will be fine. No, actually, you will be perfect. You will have plenty of time to prepare if there is more than one. Congratulations, I am so thrilled for you.

On a funny note, I just used "three is a magic number" reference in my post. I literally hit "publish" five minutes ago. Mine is not about triplets--it's about parenting a three-year-old, but it's kind of funny that I thought of the same song. On the other hand, how many songs are there about number 3? Maybe it is not that coincidental after all...

Wowza! When you hit the jackpot, you really, really hit the jackpot!

Congratulations on whatever the magic number happens to be.

Boy, do we have opposite problems! Ha! I can totally sympathize with your fear though, three would have terrified me too.

I hear a lot about not counting on a multiple pregnancy until you're well through the first trimester -- so many multiples 'vanish', so hopefully you'll drop at least to two on your own.

Deep breaths, right?

And by the way, wasn't your ultrasound supposed to be on the 5th? What happened?

OH MY GOD, THREE.

You're handling this way better than I would have. I'd be clinging from the ceiling trying to snort my way through the lighting fixture right about now. But if the doc says it'll likely be just one, then I'd take comfort in that, if I were you.

And congrats on the heartbeat :)

WOW. This is BIG news!

I can understand your concern, but it WILL work out fine. You're gonna be a great mom, whether it's to 1, 2 or 3.

Congratulations on seeing a heartbeat!

Holy mother of G-d. Wow.

I think, once I picked my jaw up off the floor, I'd be freaked out too.

No matter what the answer ends up being... you'll get through it. Right?

And can I steal your husband? What a great way to make you laugh. :

*hug* Hang in there.

OMG!!! WOW!!!

Yeah, I can imagine you're a little freaked out, I would be too.

When do you go back for another ultrasound?

I'm not keen on multiples of any order myself.

Congratulations on seeing a heartbeat, that's fabulous!

You're doctor is probably right.
A friend of mine had a small second sac at the first scan, and now has 1 lovely baby.

Either way, you'll make it through.

3 sacs? Holy schmoley!

Oh my goodness, I assume you are going for repeat scans now every week?

Just because, well, how will you know what's happened otherwise?

What's that saying? In for a penny, in for a pound? I'm not sure it's appropriate to this situation but it's what popped into my head. Wow!

From what your doc said, it does sound like it's maybe a bit early to throw an "I'm having Triplets, oh shit" party. Like Adrienne said, congratulations no matter what the magic numbers ends up being!

What did the doc say about the spotting? Anything to be concerned about?

Nicole said...

Whoa baby, that's a lot of sacs!!! I am so excited for you!!! Just so very excited that I don't know what else to say, but, Whoohooo!!!

Watson said...

Wow Susan,

Just WOW.

As usual, you seem to be handling this with grace and a sense of humor.

I hope the spotting stops and that things just work out perfectly for you.

Hang in there girl!!

...am still laughing at you showing the ultrasound pic to me and saying, "WHAT DO YOU SEE?" Clearly, I couldn't miss the THREE black ovals on the paper! Can't wait to see what the docs say on Tuesday! I love you and Auntie April will be there to help out whether it's 1, 2, or 3. Hey- and now we understand why they don't usually put more than 2 embryos in there, huh? :)

WT???

Congrats...I think.

WOW!!! 3. I don't know what to say.

"Hi everyone. Glad you are all home."
:) Sweet hubby hahaha

I can't wait until Tuesday when you (we!!) get a better idea of what is going on.

We are all here for you no matter what! You are going to be a phenominal mother.
